Tech Tip: Water Pump Plastic Impeller Failure

December 22, 2009

APPLICATION
All water pumps using a plastic impeller; some typical vehicles:
• Chrysler vehicles using 58-541, 579, 585, 571, 536
• Ford vehicles using 58-529
• Jeep vehicles using 58-551

PROBLEM
If the original pump impeller looks eroded like the sample picture below, cylinder head or gasket problems will destroy the replacement unit if not corrected.

CAUSE
Plastic impellers erode because of steam in coolant (typical failure shown below).  Head gasket leaks and cracked heads allow aeration of the coolant, which develops pockets of super-heated air that destroys the impeller.

SOLUTION
Maintain proper coolant levels, eliminate air bubbles, use O.E. recommended coolant, check operation of thermostat, and quickly repair gasket or head problems.
