HVAC systems often fail because the air conditioning compressor fails. Not following the proper service procedures or compressor oil recommendations could be factors that contribute to premature compressor failure.

Refrigerant
Since the mid-‘90s, all vehicles have been using R-134a refrigerant, but, now, vehicles are arriving at your shop equipped with R-1234yf refrigerant. This is a more environmentally friendly refrigerant that is mandated by model-year 2021. But, R-1234yf can be found starting on some 2014 model-year vehicles. The switch to R-1234yf typically happens when an automaker has introduced a new or redesigned platform. The fastest way to tell is by looking at the decal under the hood that includes the refrigerant and oil specifications. Also, the service ports are different for R-1234yf.
