Code Reader Podcast: DTC P0304 & The Cost to Find a Problem

Similar to our last podcast, today we’re taking a slightly different approach and discussing a specific vehicle that was brought into the shop of one of TechShop’s contributors, Olle Gladso.

In past podcasts, we’ve looked at specific DTCs and have broken down what techs should look for when diagnosing a vehicle with that code.

Similar to our last podcast, today we’re taking a slightly different approach and discussing a specific vehicle that was brought into the shop of one of TechShop’s contributors, Olle Gladso.

A customer of Olle’s brought in a 2004 BMW X5 with the well-known M54 engine. The complaint was that the engine was running unusually rough and the check engine light was on. A DTC scan revealed DTC P0304, cylinder misfire cylinder 4.

The symptom was very evident when the vehicle came in and as it turns out, it had been at a different shop. The spark plug and ignition coil in cylinder #4 were replaced which didn’t resolve the issue, then the fuel injector for cylinder #4 was replaced.

The new injector did not solve the problem either, and upon recommendation to tear down the engine for diagnosis, the customer decided to take their car elsewhere and that’s when Olle first got to take a look at it.
