Matco Tools’ MCTB100 CAN Test Box (CTB) is a diagnostic tool which connects to a vehicle’s OBDII connector and is used to easily diagnose electrical faults.

• When a scan tool fails to establish communication, the OBDII system seems not to respond, or a CAN-Bus system related fault code is registered, this tool allows testing at the communication link.

• It instantly checks power and ground circuits, identifies communication link protocols, and can connect to an oscilloscope for signal capture and collection of signal waveform data using internal combustion engines.

• The CTB terminal pins are accessible with the standard 4mm banana jacks.

• The CTB kit includes a pair of banana jack silicone shielded probe leads with the standard 8mm BNC connector on the other end, which ensures connection with nearly all oscilloscopes available on the market.

This month’s diagnostic journey begins with a 2008 Land Rover Discovery that is taken in to a local testing facility for an emission test and fails due to a series of misfire codes.

Misfire activity is found on cylinders 2, 4, 6, 8 and 3; at first glance this series of codes implies that there may be bank 2 issues, but the cylinder 3 code throws a wrench into that mode of thought.
