The Monroe shocks and struts brand of Tenneco Inc. has announced the return of the Monroe Shocktober promotion program, including a valuable installer pre-paid debit card promotion and a corresponding consumer mail-in rebate, during the busy fall selling season.

From September 1 through October 31, 2010, automotive service professionals can earn up to $120 in pre-paid debit cards for qualifying sales of Monroe products through the Shocktober promotion.

“This promotion is ideal: premium products, exciting rewards and a busy fall selling season,” said Sheryl Bomia, North America programs manager, Tenneco.

Participants who sell 40 pairs of qualifying premium ride control products will earn a $120 Monroe pre-paid debit card. Participants who complete 10, 20 or 30 pairs of qualifying sales during the promotional period can earn pre-paid debit cards of $30, $60 or $90, respectively. There are no limits to the rewards a shop owner, service writer or technician can earn through the promotion. Monroe is also offering a consumer promotion called “Shocktober” that rewards motorists who purchase four qualifying ride control products with a mail-in rebate for the lowest cost unit (up to the current Monroe and/or Rancho suggested list price).

Monroe products included in the promotion are Monroe Reflex shocks (911000 and 911500 series); Monroe Reflex struts (931000, 932000 and 941000 series); Monroe Sensa-Trac shocks (5600, 5700, 5900, 37000, 39000 and 58000 series); Monroe Sensa-Trac struts and cartridges (71000, 72000, 73000, 139000, 171000, 172000 and 271000 series); and Monroe Gas-Magnum shocks (34000 series).

All promotional scorecard entries must be postmarked by Dec. 1, 2010.

Even for a lot of great technicians, an oscilloscope, lab scope or just “scope” can be an intimidating piece of equipment. They know it can help to solve some diagnostic dilemmas and change them from a “parts swapper” to a real diagnostician, but sometimes it feels that every time it’s pulled from the toolbox, it is an unproductive exercise and they might be better off just ordering a part and taking a gamble. All technicians know more complex cars with more expensive modules and sensors are coming to shops, so parts swapping is not usually an option. And bumbling around with a tool that you do not understand while working on flat rate can leave you working for free. That’s why getting past “scope phobia” can help you make a better living and unlock your potential.I am going to set my ego aside and tell you about my journey of becoming a technician who feels comfortable with using a scope.Early in my journey, I read magazine articles and took a lot of courses in which trainers evangelized on the power of their scope. It felt like they were using magic when they were able to spot a burnt valve or worn spark plug by just looking at a small section of a waveform. When I tried, I had issues getting the waveform to show up on the screen, or it would look nothing like their waveform. It was frustrating.
