Auto service professionals and motorists alike recognize that the fuel systems in today’s cars are much different from those in older models. Many late-model cars today are equipped with gasoline direct injection (GDI), in which fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. Direct injection is also the industry standard for light-duty diesel engines.
During combustion, atomization of the fuel takes place in a very short period of time, typically measured in milliseconds. Precise spray patterns and fuel metering are especially critical in assuring complete and effective combustion, which is essential for proper engine performance, fuel economy and minimal exhaust emissions.
Key to the performance of direct injection is the need for extreme cleanliness in all components of the fuel system, and particularly with the backs of the intake valves. Even microscopic bits of debris can compromise the precision and effectiveness of gasoline and diesel fuel injectors. In addition, carbon deposit buildup on the intake valves can compromise the efficiency and completeness of the combustion process, further degrading engine performance.
In response to the changing engine needs of the marketplace, Penray, Inc. now offers two advanced fuel additives designed to remove harmful deposits from the fuel system in today’s cars and light trucks. In addition, Penray has recently introduced a two-step professional service kit designed specifically for removing carbon buildup from the backs of intake valves in GDI engines.
For complete fuel system cleaning in both gasoline and light-duty diesel-powered vehicles, Penray offers its Direct Injection Fuel System Cleaner #2113. This product, formulated and manufactured in the U.S., is particularly effective in dissolving and cleaning debris and particulates from all parts of a vehicle’s fuel system, says the company.
This product is formulated with dual-acting detergents using Poly Ether Amine (PEA) and Polyisobutylene (PIB) technology, which combine to eliminate harmful deposits in GDI and mulit-port engines. In addition, this proprietary blend includes additives that provide enhanced lubricity and corrosion protection throughout the fuel system, as well as anti-oxidants that promote fuel stability. This is especially critical with today’s ethanol fuels. All of these features combine to improve overall engine performance including better idle quality, faster acceleration and improved fuel economy, all with lower levels of exhaust emissions, says the company.
To ensure that the backs of the intake valves are cleaned in GDI engines, Penray has introducted a two-step Direct Injection Cleaning Kit #2601 for professional use. The kit incorporates the Direct Injection Cleaner #2113, ensuring the entire fuel system is cleaned, as well as Back of Valve Cleaner #2612. The 2612 is administered through the throttle body to ensure that the product reaches the backs of the intake valves for cleaning.
Multi-port engine designs pose different challenges. Penray’s Total Fuel System Cleaner #2216 uses synthetic technology with PEA chemistry. This exclusive blend is especially effective at removing carbon deposits from multi-port combustion chambers in gasoline engines, according to Penray. These deposits inhibit complete combustion and compromise performance. By eliminating carbon deposits, this product prevents hesitation, sluggishness and stalling, while reducing fuel octane requirements by restoring the engine’s original compression ratio.
“The precision of today’s direct injection gasoline and light-duty diesel engines provides excellent driveability, economy and performance,” explains Mark Kardon, director of marketing for Penray. “However, these systems must be maintained in optimal condition in order to perform as designed. Extended service intervals can jeopardize the performance of these critical systems, as can clogged fuel injectors, which are appearing with increasing frequency.”
“The simple periodic use of our fuel system cleaners can help keep these engines operating at the peak of performance,” concludes Kardon.
