Makita, a worldwide manufacturer of technologically advanced power tools that are more compact with less weight yet deliver industrial strength power and results, is proud to announce the release of its new 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 3-Speed Brushless Motor Impact Driver, model BTD144.

This powerful and versatile impact driver has a variable 3-speed power selection switch, providing the user with precise fastening control for a wide range of applications, from fastening cabinet screws to driving lag bolts.

The new BTD144 is the latest in a long line of innovation from Makita in the impacts category.

“Makita has been the market leader in the U.S. for cordless impact drivers since 1988 and the new 3-Speed Brushless Motor Impact Driver takes our leadership position even further,” said Ethan Haughawout, Makita product manager, cordless tools.  “We have combined Brushless Motor Technology with 3-Speed Impact Power in the new BTD144 to give the end user unprecedented power, battery run-time, ergonomics and versatility.”

3-Speed Power Control and Brushless Motor Technology

The Makita-built brushless motor with variable 3-speed power selection offers soft, medium and hard impact power to cover a wide range of fastening tasks:
• Soft impact setting: 0-1,300 RPM and 0-1,300 IPM for small fasteners such as hinge screws for woodworking.
• Medium impact setting: 0-2,000 RPM and 0-2,800 IPM for medium sized fasteners such as drywall screws.
• Hard impact setting: 0-2,600 RPM and 0-3,400 IPM and 1,420 in. lbs. of Max Torque for large fasteners such as lag bolts.

Consistent with all of Makita’s impact products, the proprietary hammer and anvil impact mechanism in the BTD144 is manufactured using the best raw materials with the highest quality steel and unique heat hardening process for maximum fastening and driving power.

Makita’s Brushless Motor Technology delivers increased motor efficiency to provide up to 20% longer battery life per charge.  With the motor’s more efficient power, the BTD144 has a more compact design at just 5-1/2” in length and only 3.3 lbs. with an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery

Ergonomic and Ease of Use Features

The BTD144 is engineered with ergonomic and ease-of-use features.  The built-in L.E.D. light has an independent on/off switch to illuminate the work surface, when needed.  In addition, a battery warning light and the built-in L.E.D. light both flash when it is time to recharge the battery.  The BTD144 has a “one-touch” 1/4” hex chuck for simple bit insertion, a tool hook, and an electric brake for increased efficiency.  The ergonomic shape fits like a glove with even pressure and easy control.

Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Battery Technology

The new BTD144 is powered by Makita’s 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery and the ENERGY STAR rated Makita Rapid Optimum Charger.  Makita’s 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles – two-and-a-half times more than Ni-Cd – and the Rapid Optimum Charger will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes for less downtime on the jobsite.

Engineered for a Wide Range of Applications

Due to their versatility, impact drivers are gaining broader acceptance for a wide range of fastening tasks.  With its variable 3-speed power selection, brushless motor, and 1,420 in. lbs. of Max Torque, the BTD144 is engineered for almost any fastening application, ranging from small cabinet screws to lag bolts and TEK screws.  The BTD144 is ideal for HVAC, mechanical, electrical, fencing/decking pro contractors, steel stud framers, woodworkers, finish carpenters, and general contractors seeking a best-in-class industrial quality 18V Lithium-Ion cordless impact driver.

Model BTD144 is a kit that includes two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries, a 30-minute Rapid Optimum Charger, and a tool case.  The BTD144Z includes the tool only.

About Makita’s 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Series.  Three years after its debut, Makita’s LXT Series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen.  Makita also added 18V Compact Lithium-Ion for cordless power in a more compact size.

Makita’s 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Rapid Optimum Charger provide several benefits over old battery technology.  When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita’s 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.  Makita’s 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles – two-and-a-half times more than Ni-Cd.  In addition,  built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and sixteen firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power.  During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life.  Makita’s Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes and an 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery in only 15 minutes.

Makita also offers an Optimum Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V Compact Lithium-Ion batteries, which plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility.

Makita’s growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more.  The LXT Series also offers a jobsite radio, rechargeable flashlights, and several different combo kits.

Makita now offers 10.8V Ultra-Compact Lithium-Ion and 7.2V Lithium-Ion cordless power tools.  These cordless tools deliver pro power and pro speed in an ultra-compact size.  The battery chargers for the 10.8V and 7.2V Lithium-Ion batteries are ENERGY STAR rated for their efficient charging performance.  Makita’s growing line of ultra-compact cordless tool solutions includes driver-drills and impact drivers, as well as rechargeable flashlights and several different combo kits.
