Solving the Self-Piercing Rivet Problem with Steck’s New Tools

When skinning aluminum doors and working on non-structure quarter panels, technicians will be required to remove and install SPRs (Self-Piercing Rivets) as part of the repair process. Steck has two new tools that allow the technician to control these repair processes without waiting in line for the very expensive hydraulic tools.

SPR Extraction Tool, P/N 21970, is a high-grade hardened steel frame with a 1/2” 20 Grade 8 hex bolt with hardened tip to push out a SPR with a 3/4” or 19 mm socket.Steck SPR Extraction Logo

  1. Follow manufacturer procedures to remove the trim panel that exposes the SPRs that need to be removed.
  2. Insert the hardened tip of the hex bolt to the inside of the door, hand tighten the bolt to the center of the SPR backside, keeping the body of the SPR Extraction tool against the door flange.
  3. Install your 3/4” or 19mm socket to your 1/2” impact wrench and engage.
  4. Within 3-5 seconds you will see the old SPR come out from the bottom.

The Steck SPR Insertion Tool, P/N 21960, is a high-grade hardened steel frame with a 1/2” 20 Grade 8 hex bolt with magnetic end and center recess to hold the replacement SPR while inserting the SPR with a 3/4” or 19 mm socket on your 1/2” impact wrench.Steck SPR InsertionSPRInsertionLogo

  1. Technician locates a spot on the flange area next the SPR you just removed to insert the replacement SPR after you have replaced the door skin or quarter panel.
  2. Insert the new SPR on the magnetic end of the hex bolt, hand-tighten to the flange area keeping the body of the SPR Insert tool against the door flange.
  3. Install your 3/4” or 19 mm socket to your 1/2” impact wrench and engage, within 3-5 seconds you will see the bottom of the screw flush with the door flange.
  4. Replace the required SPRs and re-install trim panel according to manufacturer procedures.

Labor/Material Savings: Works in conjunction with the Steck Al Skin Zipper, P/N 21892 and Al Skin Zipper2, P/N 21896 allows the technician complete the door skin process and build his/her resume for aluminum repair.
