Mazda Tech Tip: Hesitation/Surge or MIL on with DTSC P0102/P0103

The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may illuminate with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0102 and/or P0103 on any 1998-'99 Mazda B-Series 2.5L. There may be driveability concerns, such as hesitation and/or surge, during acceleration under normal driving conditions. This may be caused by an out-of-specification mass air flow (MAF) sensor.

The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may illuminate with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0102 and/or P0103 on any 1998-’99 Mazda B-Series 2.5L. There may be driveability concerns, such as hesitation and/or surge, during acceleration under normal driving conditions. This may be caused by an out-of-specification mass air flow (MAF) sensor.

Customers complaining of this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Verify that the vehicle exhibits at least one of the following symptoms:

  • MIL on;
  • Engine surge; or
  • Engine hesitation.

2. Check for DTCs. If DTCs P0102 and/or P0103 are found, proceed to the next step. If not, refer to the appropriate workshop manual diagnostic procedures.

3. Replace the MAF with a modified part (P/N ZZM4 13 210).

4. Verify the repair with an NGS tester. If the MAF codes are cleared and other codes are shown, perform normal diagnostic procedures to verify other driveability concerns.
