Over the years, GM has saved a bundle on manufacturing the 3.1L engine by using the production line tooling it originally developed for the 2.8L V6. By simply changing the bore diameter, the displacement of the same engine block could now be increased for more power and torque.

Tenneco Emissions Control Workshop Brings Profitable Repair Strategies to Technicians

Tenneco’s popular Walker Emissions Control Diagnostics Workshop now features an even heavier emphasis on diagnostic emissions control strategies and diagnosing drivability repair issues. Tenneco has partnered with Automotive Training Group (ATG) to bring this unique training experience to professional technicians at more than 40 locations across North America during 2012.

Diagnostic Dilemmas: Going with the Flow

This month’s Diagnostic Dilemma is headlined by a loss of power complaint in a 2002 Toyota 4-Runner equipped with the 3.4L V6 engine and automatic transmission. The 4-Runner had a relatively smooth idle, but wouldn’t shift gears at wide-open throttle (WOT). Because I live high in the Colorado mountains, loss of power complaints are relatively common and, in most cases, can be confirmed by test-driving the vehicle up one of the mountainous inclines in my area.

Free New Wells Vehicle Electronics Video Covers Toyota EVAP Diagnostics

The step-by-step diagnosis and repair of EVAP system issues on a 1999 Toyota Camry LE model is now covered in a free troubleshooting video available from Wells Vehicle Electronics. The company’s Technical Services team produced the video using a Camry LE model that had failed an emissions test as a result of a PO446 code, which indicates that a leak was detected while activating the vacuum switch valve (VSV) during an EVAP monitor test.

Tech Tip: Honda Has MIL On with DTC P1457

The EVAP bypass solenoid valve can fail due to corrosion, caused by water getting inside. If the water contains road salt, the solenoid windings could corrode, causing the valve to fail. In a few rare instances, the corrosion could be severe enough to cause an internal short in the solenoid valve, which could damage the ECM/PCM. If this happens, both the bypass solenoid valve and the ECM/PCM would need to be replaced.

Diagnostic Solutions: Exhaust Restriction Diagnosis

To put exhaust restriction diagnostics in perspective, import specialist shops have been dealing with loss-of-power complaints caused by exhaust restriction since catalytic converters were popularly introduced in 1974. Early “cats” experienced frequent failure because the carbureted engines of that era were notorious for poor fuel control.

Tech Tip: Toyota Key Off Evap Diagnosis

Toyota has MIL on with DTC P0456 or P0455 and P0441; and MIL on with DTC P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402 and P2419.
