Tech Tip: Kia Rondo Cranks But Doesn’t Start

There was no injection duration and no spark but the RPM was showing in scan tool data. See how one tech diagnosed the problem with a scan tool.

Vehicle: 2009 Kia Rondo, L4-2.4L, Automatic Transmission

Mileage: 122,445

Problem: The engine cranked but would not start.

Details: There was no injection duration and no spark but the RPM was showing in scan tool data.

Diagnosis: The tech scoped the cam and crank sensors and found that the timing chain was out of sync (see good and bad example waveform images).

Confirmed Repair: The technician replaced timing chain, sprockets and guides. The problem was fixed.
